Dental Prosthetics: Types, Processes, and Costs

Dental prosthetics encompass a range of solutions from crowns and dental bridges to dentures and implants, catering to different needs, whether replacing an entire tooth, a series of teeth, or just parts of one. Let’s dive into the details of these procedures and their costs.

Why is Dental Prosthetics Necessary?

Whether due to gum disease, injury, severe decay, or genetic factors, missing or damaged teeth can lead to several issues if not properly addressed. Even the loss of a single tooth can negatively impact oral health and self-esteem, affecting chewing ability, speech, jawbone integrity, and causing the shifting of remaining teeth. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers numerous excellent options for replacing missing teeth, helping restore both smiles and health.

Types of Dental Prosthetics

Dental prosthetics can be fixed or removable depending on whether they can be taken out of the mouth.

Fixed Dental Prosthetics

Fixed dental prosthetics are permanently installed in the mouth. This category includes various material crowns, bridge prosthetics, and porcelain veneers which are ideal for closing gaps between teeth or correcting shape and color issues.

Dental Crown

Among the most popular are metal-ceramic and metal-free crowns that cover damaged teeth. Zirconia crowns, made with CAD/CAM technology, are perfect for front teeth due to their precision. Pressed ceramic crowns are entirely made from porcelain, making them suitable for those with metal allergies.

Dental Bridge

Bridges, fixed to pillar teeth or implants, are excellent for replacing one or multiple missing teeth.

Dental Veneers

Used for cosmetic restoration, direct or pressed ceramic veneers offer significant improvements, particularly for incisors and canines.

Removable Dental Prosthetics

Removable prosthetics are options for extensive or complete tooth loss. They are less stable compared to fixed prosthetics but are more cost-effective.

Partial removable prosthetics made from metal sheets attach to natural teeth with clasps or hidden attachments. Fixed bridge prosthetics can also be created with dental implants.

In cases of complete toothlessness, full removable prosthetics are an option, though achieving perfect chewing stability can be challenging. Here, 4-6-8 implants per jaw can be used to create a fully fixed bridge, restoring functions akin to natural teeth.

Dental Implantation

Dental implants serve as artificial tooth roots, onto which crowns, bridges, or removable dentures can be attached. Their advantage lies in replacing natural teeth without needing to grind down adjacent healthy teeth. Implants with fixed dentures offer much greater stability compared to traditional removable dentures.

Process of Dental Prosthetics

The processes vary with the type of prosthetic.

Crowns and Bridges

Initially, a thorough examination is conducted, followed by the dentist preparing the tooth under local anesthesia. After impressions are taken, the final crown or bridge is made in a dental lab. Meanwhile, a temporary crown is placed until the permanent one is ready.

Removable and Combined Prosthetics

The process for removable or combined prosthetics (incorporating both fixed and removable parts) is more complex. It involves multiple impressions and trials over several weeks to complete the removable or partially fixed prosthetic.

Implantation Procedure

Implantation involves a pre-operative assessment and precise planning. If the bone quantity is sufficient, the implant is surgically placed at the missing tooth's location. This surgery, lasting 1-1.5 hours, is pain-free due to local anesthesia. After a healing period of 3-4 months, the patient receives the necessary prosthetics.

Lifespan of Dental Prosthetics

The lifespan depends on proper oral hygiene, including regular tartar removal and dental check-ups to maintain the new teeth.

Cost of Dental Prosthetics

Costs vary significantly based on the clinic, treatment methods, and materials used. For specific costs, refer to our clinic's pricing page.
