Inflamed Tooth: Managing Dental Pulpitis

Understanding Dental Pulpitis

An inflamed tooth can cause severe pain and should not be ignored. Prompt dental care increases the likelihood of saving the tooth. What do you need to know about dental pulpitis, and what options are available to manage the inflammation?

How Does Tooth Inflammation Occur?

The tooth's innermost part, the pulp, contains nerves and vessels. Pulpitis, or dental pulp inflammation, can be a painful condition caused by bacteria-driven tooth decay or other dental health issues.

Pulpitis is categorized into two types:

  • Reversible Pulpitis: This condition applies when the inflammation is mild, and the dental pulp can still be saved.

  • Irreversible Pulpitis: Occurs when the inflammation and symptoms, such as pain, are severe, and the dental pulp cannot be saved.

Causes of Dental Pulpitis

A healthy tooth's enamel and dentin protect the pulp from infections. However, when these protective layers are compromised, bacteria can invade the pulp, causing pain and swelling.

The most common cause of pulpitis is tooth decay, which results from poor oral hygiene, bacteria, and excessive sugar consumption. Untreated tooth decay can reach the dental pulp and root.

Other causes of inflamed teeth include:

  • Trauma or injury to the tooth,

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding),

  • Certain invasive dental procedures.

Symptoms of Pulpitis

The primary symptom of an inflamed tooth is pain, which can be sudden, intense, and throbbing or dull. Symptoms of reversible pulpitis include sensitivity to sweet foods or drinks and cold, lasting only a few seconds.

Symptoms of irreversible pulpitis may include:

  • Intense pain,

  • Sensitivity to cold lasting longer than 30 seconds,

  • Pain when tapping the tooth,

  • Swelling around the tooth and gum,

  • Fever,

  • Bad breath,

  • Potential development of an abscess in the mouth, leading to a swollen face.

Treating an Inflamed Tooth

Dental pulpitis is diagnosed with an X-ray by a dentist to assess the extent of decay and inflammation.

For reversible pulpitis, treating the cause of the inflammation, such as removing decayed areas and restoring with a filling, can alleviate pain.

In cases of irreversible pulpitis, root canal treatment may help by removing the deceased dental pulp, but sometimes extraction is unavoidable.

For inflammation post-root canal, an apicoectomy, which removes the inflamed bone area and the tip of the tooth root, might be necessary. Symptoms of inflammation in a root-treated tooth are similar to those of an inflamed tooth.

Anti-Inflammatory Measures for Teeth

What can be done for pain management? Home remedies for an inflamed tooth only work temporarily until the patient can see a dentist. At the first sign of pain, sensitivity, or inflammation, it's crucial to seek professional help as an inflamed tooth can lead to severe complications and even become a source of dental infection.

It's also important to regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and tartar removal. Although there is no specific medication for dental inflammation, drugs containing diclofenac or ibuprofen can help alleviate toothache.
