Types, Process, and Costs of Dental Prosthetics

Dental prosthetics is a broad term encompassing everything from crowns and bridgework to dentures and implants. Whether replacing an entire set of teeth or just a fragment, it's essential to understand the options available. Here's what you need to know about the procedures!

Why are Dental Prosthetics Necessary?

Whether due to gum disease, injury, severe decay, or genetic factors, the loss or damage of a tooth can cause numerous problems if not properly addressed. Even the loss of a single tooth can negatively affect our oral health and confidence, impacting our ability to chew, speak, and maintain the integrity of our jawbone. Fortunately, there are many excellent options available for replacing missing teeth, helping to restore both your smile and your health.

Types of Dental Prosthetics

Dental prosthetics can be fixed or removable, depending on whether they can be taken out of the mouth.

Fixed Dental Prosthetics

Fixed dental prosthetics are permanently installed in the mouth. This category includes various types of crowns, bridgework, and porcelain veneers, which are excellent for closing gaps between teeth and making color and shape corrections.

Dental Crown

Metal-ceramic and metal-free crowns are popular options that act as a protective cover for damaged teeth. Zirconia crowns are made with CAD/CAM technology for precise front teeth restorations. Pressed ceramic crowns, made entirely of porcelain, are a great choice for those with metal allergies.

Dental Bridge

Bridges, which can be attached to natural teeth or implants, provide an excellent solution for single or multiple tooth gaps.

Dental Veneers

Porcelain veneers are used for aesthetic restorations, primarily for incisors and canines, offering dramatic corrections.

Removable Dental Prosthetics

Removable prosthetics are options for extensive or complete tooth loss. Though less stable than fixed prosthetics, they are more affordable. Dentures can be partial or complete.

Partial removable prosthetics are made from a metal plate that attaches to natural teeth with clasps or hidden anchors. Fixed bridges can also be created with dental implants.

In cases of complete edentulism, full removable dentures are used, though achieving perfect chewing stability can be challenging. Here, a full fixed bridge supported by 4-6-8 implants per jaw can provide functionalities akin to natural teeth.

Implantation

Dental implants serve as artificial tooth roots, which can support crowns, bridges, or removable dentures. They replace natural teeth, so there is no need to file down healthy teeth for crown or bridge placement. Implants make attached dentures far more stable than traditional removable ones.

Process of Getting Dental Prosthetics

The process varies with the type of prosthetic:

Crowns and Bridges

The process starts with a preliminary examination, followed by tooth preparation under local anesthesia. After taking impressions, the final crown or bridge is fabricated in a dental lab. A temporary crown is placed until the final fixture is ready.

Removable and Combined Prosthetics

Creating removable or combined prosthetics, which include both fixed and removable parts, is a complex process involving multiple trials and weeks of fabrication after initial impressions.

Implantation

Implant placement starts with an evaluation and detailed planning. If the patient has sufficient bone mass, the implant is surgically placed in the gap left by the missing tooth. This surgery, lasting 1-1.5 hours, is pain-free due to local anesthesia. After a healing period of 3-4 months, the patient receives the final prosthetics.
